I was born in outback Australia (far western NSW). both of my grand-fathers were involved in art, one an art dealer and collector from Amsterdam, the other a landscape artist. Being surrounded by art as a child, I found myself always drawing.
After a fairly adventurous childhood in the country, my family moved to Sydney where I ended up in an undergraduate graphic design course. After about 18 months I was already making a living doing freelance work, so I left to make my fortune .... which never really arrived, as the harsh reality of the corporate advertising world made me realise that the possibilities for furthering my creative abilities were pretty slim. Somewhere during this time I received my first tattoo from one of Sydney's better known shops. The whole process fascinated me, as did the reverent atmosphere of the shop itself. Thanks to a new flat mate who had just returned from the United States, I got my hands on some tattoo magazines that had early work by guys like Ed Hardy, Mike Malone, Leo Zulueta, Eddy Deutche, Bernie Luther, the Leu Family and Guy Aitchison.
I was hooked! I continued to draw tattoo designs for friends and myself, then eventually, after about two years of continually pestering tattooists for a chance to get my hands into it, I was given an apprenticeship and the rest is a piece of personal (tattoo) history.
I have worked in various places around Australia and the world including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco (Mom's Body Shop), Portland Oregon (Atlas Gallery), Vancouver (Dutchman Tattoo) and Yokohama Japan (Horiyoshi III's Studio III).
I like to specialise in large Eastern Art influenced designs, particularly Buddhist and Japanese design work, but I also dig anything that I can sink my creative teeth into. I have been tattooing professionally since 1993 and hope to continue my study and understanding of the craft for many years to come. |
